I've thought of a few more:

1) Having scale, logo and copyright as seperate controls. That way it would be possible to reposition these, especially over controls that you may place at the bottom of the map

2) Having different navigation control sizes as per the ajax control

It would be great to have 3D Maps without the ActiveX plugin.

Chris

I would recommend not using the control if August is your deadline. I think it unlikely it will be released before Q3 but I dont have any real evidence to base that on.

Any idea (even a ball park guess) as to when this control will be ready with a "go live" license? I'm about to begin a project that I would love to use this control in instead of the javascript based control. However, I need to go live with it around the end of August 2009. Any chance it could be ready for primetime by then?

Great idea John, I have updated to article with my thoughts of what should be in the core control, and what should be in an external toolkit(s)

Great list Brian and thanks for the DeepEarth plug. We're just in the long process of getting a good template for a control sorted then we will attempt to fill this void by getting like minded developers to share and collaborate.
Personally I think a supporting toolkit is needed for most of this, allowing a developer to get this functionality as they need it while also not having to include it if they don't want it,therefore keeping the control small. I'd hate to the control get bloated.
When reading through your list what do you think needs to be added to the core control versus become a supporting toolkit control?
I think the core control needs to enable each of these but each piece should be seperate, excluding core imagery things like Birdseye and XXXXX that should be baked in.

2 things for mine:

Compound Geometry, Multi polygon and complex polygon support. It would make life so much easier getting data out of SQL Server 2008 (or any other spatial DB) and into BM Silverlight.

Also, programmatic control over the download of the basemap tiles would be good to speed up the performance of a BM Silverlight app, rather than having to always wait for the "tile torrent" to finish.

Cheers,
Hugh
